Chimneys

Concrete and steel chimneys have their own unique design and maintenance problems. Routine steeplejack inspections need to be reviewed by a Competent Person who can assess the implications of defects and recommend long term monitoring regimes or any necessary repairs.

There are specialist investigation techniques and repairs that can be undertaken in case of need.

On the left is a 200 Mb merged photograph of one of TilburyPower Stations chimneys. The composite retains exceptional detail which can be seen above.

Below is a section from a steel chimney at Aberthaw Power Station. This chimney suffered from corrosion, plate thickness loss and weld cracking.

Natural Draught Cooling Towers

natural draught cooling tower 1These are a feature of thermal power stations, petro-chemical plants and some other process plants. Collapses of towers in the UK in 1965 and 1984 resulted in considerable investigations, design changes and development of inspection and assessment regimes. Some towers have been strengthened, some repaired and others just monitored for safety until end of life. Survey techniques allow plotting of cracks and shape errors and can detect small movements between surveys.
